Nightscape/Artistic
Artistic and visually engaging images with an astronomical theme, including wide-field images, Milky Way panoramas, star trails, and star parties. Capture the beauty of the night sky combined with terrestrial landscapes.
Aurora
Images that capture the beauty of the Aurora, encompassing both the Northern and Southern Lights. Highlight the vibrant colors and dynamic displays in Earth’s polar regions.
Deep Sky
Images of nebulae, galaxies, globular and open star clusters, and other deep-space objects, without a terrestrial foreground. Showcase the vastness and beauty of the universe beyond our Solar System.
Solar System
Images of the Sun, planets, comets, and asteroids, without a terrestrial foreground. Highlight the wonders of our Solar System through detailed astrophotography.
Dark Sky Places
Images taken from any of New Zealand’s official or aspiring dark sky places, including Aoraki Mackenzie, Aotea/Great Barrier Island, Rakiura/Stewart Island, Wai-iti Nelson, and Wairarapa. Capture the pristine night skies free from light pollution in these designated areas.
Smartphone
Astrophotography images captured using a smartphone. Highlight the accessibility and innovation in astrophotography through mobile technology, showcasing the night sky’s beauty using everyday devices.
Timelapse
Time-lapse photography of astronomical subjects, including stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. (Time-lapse must be one sequence only.) Capture the movement of the night sky over time.
Rules
Competition Closing Date: 30th of September, 2024. Entries will be accepted till 11:59PM

Eligibility:
- The competition is open to all New Zealand residents.
- The entrant must have taken and owned the copyright of all images submitted. Entries from any previous New Zealand Astrophotography competition/s are ineligible.
- There is no restriction on when the image was taken, except for the Dark Sky Reserve category.

Category Specific Rules:
- Aurora Australis: Only images of the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) are allowed.
- Smartphone: Only images taken by a smartphone are eligible.
- Nightscape/Artistic: Unnatural, digitally enhanced, and composite images are eligible. However, the judging panel may ask about your processing methods if your photo is shortlisted. Please provide details of digital enhancements and composites in the image description.
- Dark Sky Reserve: Images for this category must be taken within the last 12 months of the competition’s closing date. Locations eligible for this category include:
- Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve
- Aotea/Great Barrier Island International Dark Sky Sanctuary
- Stewart Island/Rakiura International Dark Sky Sanctuary
- Wai-iti, Nelson International Dark Sky Park
- Wairarapa International Dark Sky Reserve
- Images taken from any official or aspiring dark sky places listed on the Dark Sky Places NZ website are eligible for this category.

Submission Guidelines:
- Each entrant is limited to a maximum of 3 images per category, with a total maximum of 18 images per entrant. For the Timelapse category, the limit is 3 time-lapse movies.
- Entries must be submitted in high-resolution PNG, JPEG, or JPG format. Video submissions should be in MP4, AVI, or MPEG formats.
- The entrant must fill out the online form and read the acknowledgment. Entries must be received before the closing date; no late entries will be accepted.

Image Authenticity and Processing:
- By submitting images, you confirm that each image:
- Was taken and processed by you.
- Does not contain data not generated through photography.
- Is your original work and does not infringe on any third-party rights.
- Unnatural, digitally enhanced, and composite images are allowed but must be declared. Undeclared composites may be disqualified for dishonesty and misrepresentation.
- By submitting images, you confirm that each image:

Prohibited Content:
- AI-generated images and ‘AI Art’ are not eligible. Images must consist of genuine astronomical data captured via observation using photographic equipment. The use of machine learning software for noise reduction and similar purposes is allowed but must be declared.
- Winning images from other competitions are not allowed.

Publication and Copyright:
- Copyright will remain with the entrant. Unless notified in writing, the Auckland Astronomical Society (AAS) reserves the right to use any images submitted in the competition for any AAS or RASNZ publications, websites, and/or exhibitions to promote astronomy in New Zealand in a non-commercial capacity.

Judging:
- The competition will have a panel of judges, including Dylan O’Donnell and Judy Schmidt.
- The judges may request high-resolution images and additional details if required.
- The judges’ decisions will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

On his YouTube channel “Star Stuff,” Dylan breaks down the cosmos with a laid-back style and wit that’s as refreshing as a cold one on a hot Aussie day. He makes astrophotography look as easy as Vegemite on toast. As Dylan himself would say, “Remember, everything is meaningless and we’re all going to die.” Dylan’s passion and expertise were so impressive last year that we had to ask him to be a judge again.
Judy Schmidt
The queen of cosmic creativity, turns raw astronomical data into breathtaking visual art. Her work has been featured in numerous scientific journals and popular science magazines, revealing the hidden beauty of the universe. Judy’s meticulous processing of images from sources like the Hubble Space Telescope highlights her dedication to sharing the wonders of the cosmos. Her motto? “Every pixel tells a story.” Judy is here to help our contestants tell theirs.
Fraser Cain
The mind behind the ever-popular Universe Today, has made the cosmos accessible to everyone with his insightful and engaging content. With a knack for breaking down complex astronomical concepts into easy-to-understand nuggets of knowledge, Fraser has built a community of space enthusiasts who eagerly tune in to his YouTube channel. His videos dive into the wonders of the universe, from the latest discoveries in space exploration to deep dives into astrophysical phenomena, all delivered with a passion that makes learning about the cosmos as captivating as a journey through the stars. Whether it’s discussing black holes, the future of space travel, or the mysteries of our solar system, Fraser’s dedication to sharing the wonders of space is unmatched.
