On a random night in August while I was on Annual leave there was a bit of chat about some upcoming auroral activity, I checked the weather and low and behold there were clouds for dayyyyys, apart from a small patch about an hour north of where I live, I decided to risk it for the biscuit and go for a drive. Once I got to Huriawa Peninsula I waited for a wee bit and as twilight began I was sure that there was a tinge of pink, grabbed my phone and took a snap and yesss there was! Grabbed my gear and trekked along the goat track on the Peninsula, I wasn't intending on going to the ocean stacks because they don't face South but had a feeling that if the action was big enough then maybe they might be a secondary foreground option for me, as it turns out my hunch was correct! I was photographing a cabbage tree and out the corner of my eye I saw a large bright ribbon in the sky, STEVE had gatecrashed AND he was in the direction of the sea stacks!! grabbed my tripod and ran in the darkness with it like a spear down the narrow path, slipped a few times but got to the stacks, clambered around on the slippery rocks to get a vantage point ( RIP ankle) captured a few frames and he dissipated... then remembered that Id left my bag way up on the Peninsula above me... ooops!
