Looking west over mount Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe in the central plateau, in the absence of light pollution and moon, its possible to identify the gegenschein (middle) and the majority of the zodiacal band of light spanning the night sky, complimenting and intersecting with the arch of our own, Milky Way.
