After a huge solar flare was confirmed, I knew I had to get somewhere pretty epic to capture it. The whole of the South Island looked sketchy except for the south coast sop away on the 4 hour drive I went! Turning up to windy but clear weather was comforting! As soon as twilight fell we could all see the beams! It was not long before we had to wait for the real show to start and start it did! The aurora got so large that the corona formed overhead and only those as far south as us saw it! It was the first time I have seen and then captured a fully formed corona was in NZ. This night was just the warm up for what would happen this year as we move closer to solar maximum.
