At the start of June, the sun suddenly remembered it was supposed to be in the solar maximum and decided to hit us with a strong CME. This gave strong auroral activity around the world over a few days, but the peak was on the night of 01/06 in New Zealand. I was in Christchurch at the time and my friend very kindly took me out to Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora to see the storm, which managed to reach KP8 just as we arrived. We ran down to the lake whilst watching the huge red beams overhead and managed to get a good hour of shooting in while the display remained strong. This picture was one of the first I took, while the activity was still peaking, and it shows the characteristic red/green colours often seen from New Zealand.
