To say the Aurora of May 11th was incredible would be an understatement. I have only ever seen the southern lights as a distant haze on the southern horizon, but on that night it was both in the zenith and to the north. This image was taken early into the night, during the first real explosion of light (substorm), where huge pillars of red light streamed up to the top of the sky. The base of the aurora was a beautiful green colour, reflected in an alpine tarn.
