What a way this was to kick off the first day of the New Zealand winter! I was already set up near Arthur’s Pass before any aurora alerts even came through. I’d camped out the night before, hoping for interesting light or photo opportunities. Then this happened. The green band cutting sharply through the pinks was surreal, and it actually moved horizontally across the sky in other frames. It was hard to choose a still from the timelapse, but this one stood out with an iridium flare. In the top right, both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are visible, with the SMC sitting just behind the aurora. These satellite galaxies can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere.
