Deep in the highest part of the Southern Alps lies Hooker Lake, nested beneath the towering peaks of Sefton and Aoraki. On the night I took this photo, the temperatures were well below freezing, as seen in the ice-covered lake below.
Above the wintry scene, the southern Milky Way hangs in the sky. Late in the winter season the centre of our galaxy begins its descent into the western horizon, sinking lower with each night until it is lost behind the glare of the sun, re-emerging early the next year.
