Deep in the central plateau of New Zealand’s North Island are some of the darkest skies in the country. In this image of Taranaki Falls, you can see the Southern Cross and Pointers, two of the most iconic asterisms in the southern sky. Above them lies the great Carina Nebula, nested within the band of the Milky Way. To the right is the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy and possible satellite of the Milky Way.
