This old house in Welshtown, an abandoned gold mining town in the Bendigo area, had been on my list for a while. As it often goes, the photo I ended up with wasn’t the one I planned. While waiting for Orion to rise and the Moon to set, I set up for some star trails. Shortly after, a surprise aurora appeared and started dancing across the sky. In fact, the beams got so strong after midnight that I couldn’t use photos from that period for star trails; the sky was just too bright. Later, clouds rolled in and spoiled the rest of the night and my Orion plans. But with this picture of star trails spinning over the aurora-lit sky, I couldn’t be happier with how the night turned out.
