Orbiting at a mean distance of 778.3 million kilometres from the sun, Jupiter is the king of the planets, with an equatorial diameter eleven times that of the Earth, about 142 900 kilometres across. Jupiter can be found shining a brilliant white quit near to the eclitic. It offers a wealth of detail for any backyard observer through most small telescopes. Fine detailed views of the planet require a telescope of 150mm or more, but smaller instruments will certainly reveal the wider equatorial belts and zones.
