Comets remain my favourite night sky object to image because they are often fleeting visitors to our night skies that can only be captured for a short time with small scopes. Many seem to be at low altitude and have to be quickly imaged in twilight. They might be visible for a week if the clouds allow, or sometimes can be visible for a long period. However once they are gone, they will not return. Comet 12P Pons Brooks is different, as it is a periodic comet that will pass the earth multiple times as it orbits the night sky. Records indicate it was first observed in 1385 in China and in 1812 by Pons and rediscovered in 1883 by Brooks. However it won’t return to our skies for 71 years, so will not be visible again in my lifetime. This image was captured as 40 x 60 second images starting an hour after sunset and continuing as the comet dropped towards the horizon, being only seven degrees high when the last image was captured.
