Story: To get this image I hiked 5 1/2 hours up to Fanthams Peak (Mt Taranaki) through deep snow and ice and dealt with temperatures well below zero (-15C windchill) and stayed at the North Island\'s coldest hut. It was the most difficult hike I\'ve ever done due to the 20kg pack weight I was carrying and the soft snow that meant for every step I took I\'d slide back down half a step, but the reward of getting this and other images in the end made it more than worth it. While not the first to get the full Milky Way arch from this location, my take on it is a bit different from others and I\'m really pleased with the result. Inside the hut it was literally freezing at -1 C and a big patch of ice on the floor. There\'s no heating at all in the hut, and the toilet is an outhouse long drop!
