For this photo I chose a nearby spot by the Shotover River, a location I’d been curious about for some time but hadn’t previously dedicated a night to. I’m always dismayed by the light pollution from Queenstown Airport and Frankton. While walking to the location, I nearly turned back; trying to photograph the Milky Way there felt almost hopeless. But I’m glad I didn’t give up. I was honestly surprised by how well it came out. The rising Moon on the left balances the town lights on the right. Faint stripes of green airglow stretch across the sky, and I particularly enjoy the hydrogen-alpha regions of the Milky Way, especially the Carina Nebula, which really stands out.
