I had been wanting to photograph this face of the dunes for a long time, and the appearance of Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) felt like the perfect opportunity. This is perhaps the steepest sand dune I’ve ever seen — a challenge to climb in daylight, and a true test at night. Reaching the top meant crossing a soft sand creek and taking our boots on and off several times in the cold. I couldn’t have pulled this off alone; luckily, my partner was available on the one clear night we had all week, and he climbed to the summit while I stayed below, capturing the scene. Though the comet was invisible to the naked eye, knowing it was there — drifting quietly above the horizon — made the scene feel even more otherworldly.
